3RD YEAR BDS BOOKS

So here I am with my new blog after approx. 1yr for all my lovely juniors. Let me introduce myself first. Hi, I am VISHAL.....VISHAL GOHIL, studying in B.D.S final yr in GRIDS, gandhinagar. You all must be a dental student or any person related to dentistry. I made this blog to guide all my juniors who will be in 3rd yr of their B.D.S. career soon. 3rd yr is also known as "honeymoon yr of B.D.S.", because it is the easiest yr of all 4 yrs of B.D.S. After reading this, don't make mistake to take 3rd yr lightly. I agree that it is easiest, In this yr you all will have the freedom to enjoy your college life because final yr won't allow you to do this as it has 8 subjects. But remember that, if you will be fail then it will be like nightmare, so enjoy, but perform best in exams. 

In this yr, you will not only learn 3 main subjects of 3rd yr B.D.S., but you will also learn 3+8 subjects of final yr =11 subjects. Clinics will start from this yr. You have to deal with living people, patients. So discipline is a must. You will also buy 3rd yr books with 4th yr books, because of clinics. Remember, I did not include final yr books in this blog.

 This yr, you will appear in 3 subject's exams, which are:

1) ORAL PATHOLOGY

2) GENERAL MEDICINE

3) GENERAL SURGERY 

- Now, I will tell you which books you should refer subject wise with reviews of real students of B.D.S.

( NOTE ) :

These books are commonly preferred books but you can use other books too. Eventually it is up to you. So be smart. 

   BOOKS ( SUBJECT WISE ) :

1) ORAL PATHOLOGY :

# THEORY ASPECT :

- SHAFER'S TEXTBOOK OF ORAL PATHOLOGY

 

- PURKIT'S ORAL PATHOLOGY

 

• Shafer's textbook of oral pathology is a bible of oral pathology. You must buy it.
  
  
  • Shafer's is great but it is lengthy & it has some unnecessary things for exam such as researches of so many people. On the other end, there is purkit which doesn't cover all the questions. So, it's good to prefer shafer & you can keep purkit by hand, if u find something difficult or so long in shafer's & for some not so important chapters ( blood, endocrine ), you can go through purkit, which is v.small & an attractive book.

• It's good to have a choice. Isn't it?....if you want to read something else rather than shafer's, you can use neville. Some topics are better in neville. Tables are there, which can be useful in exams.
  

# PRACTICAL ASPECT :

- MANUAL OF ORAL HISTOLOGY & ORAL PATHOLOGY : COLOUR ATLAS & TEXT : MAJI JOSE

 

• Maji jose : a great book for practicals. You may already purchased it in first yr for DADH sub., or now you will buy it for oral pathology. It has diagrams of slides with brief information on various topics. So, use it wisely.

2) GENERAL MEDICINE :

# THEORY ASPECT :

- DAVIDSON'S PRINCIPLES & PRACTICE FOR MEDICINE 

 

- TEXTBOOK OF CLINICAL MEDICINE FOR DENTAL STUDENTS : S.N.CHUGH 

 

• Davidson's is a reference book for b.d.s. student.
  
  
  • Chugh is a nice book for dental students, but if someone is interested in learning general medicine then one should refer davidson's, a v.good book, especially for respiratory system. Symptomatology is nicely given in chugh. Overall chugh is a nice book for dental student.

- P.J.MEHTA'S PRACTICAL MEDICINE 

 

• A good book for dental students
  As dental student hardly gets chance to concentrate on medical subjects because of clinics. This book explains every system in detail and in simple language.
  

  - SHEKHAR ASARSA

3) GENERAL SURGERY :

# THEORY ASPECT :

- A CONCISE TEXTBOOK OF SURGERY : DAS

 

• S.das is a v.good book. Its language is v.easy to understand. It starts with the basics, though description is more, but it is easy to remember & understand.
  

- MANIPAL MANUAL OF GENERAL SURGERY : RAJGOPAL SHENOY 

 

• Shenoy is a v.good book, some topics are awesome, depends on which topic you refer. Topics are explained in a v.systematic manner, which makes understanding easier. In short, it's a book of quick review for general surgery.
  

  - SHILPA MISHRA

  - TEXTBOOK OF SURGERY FOR DENTAL STUDENTS BY SANJAY MARWAH 

# PRACTICAL ASPECT :

- MANUAL OF CLINICAL SURGERY : DAS

 

• This is practical oriented book by das, in which individual cases are discussed, though few cases are missing like amputation which is important for university exam. It is useful for viva but sometimes looks boring because of long answers.
  

  - HUSEN CHALLAWALA

- SHORT CASES IN SURGERY BY S.K.BHATTACHARYA

 

• Point wise answer is given in bhattacharya. You can use it for theory also. Differential diagnosis, charts, diagrams are given, so we can easily correlate it. This book is v.useful for viva questions.
  

  - MAHARSHI PANDYA

• REVIEW BOOKS FOR 3RD YR B.D.S. :

  - QUICK REVIEW SERIES FOR B.D.S. 3RD YEAR BY J JYOTSNA RAO

  

   

  •  It's a great book to study general medicine & general surgery even if you don't have recommended books for those subjects, but in case of oral pathology it isn't sufficient. It's a good book to get an exam oriented questions. Easy to study, learn & understand.

• Alternative book for same purpose.
   Remember, staff always hate review books because of   insufficient content. But it serves as a lifeline for an average or not so good students, whereas brilliant student can use it as a supplemental book.
  
  & now onwards remember op, gm & gs...These are short forms for all 3 subjects. You will use these short forms a lot this yr ;).
